Here at Grieve and Groove a lot of us have found music to be a huge aid on our journeys. Like for those moments when you need a good cry, or when you're having an unexpected positive day, or even when you feel so low that the only thing you can muster is putting your headphones in and shutting the world out with hours of melodies.
Here we will share the music which has helped in the past (and still continues to do so) in the hopes that it will evoke the same feelings for you as it did for us.

MUSIC AS A FORM OF ESCAPISM
I don't know about you lovely people but music really helps me to get my groove back *literally*. My music choices really depend on my mood, so when I am feeling a little low on energy I will pick something to pick me up and help me shift my mood. Alternatively sometimes I need to have a good cry and let all of my negative emotions out which are weighing me down. If this is a new concept to you then I would highly recommend music as a way of expressing your emotions. It personally can help me to figure out how I am feeling on a particular day when things feel confusing.
If this is something that is really resonating with you I am curious to find out what kind of music you go to first when you are feeling happy vs when you are feeling sad. Is there a particular artist you turn to when it's a down day? Do you have a go to grooving playlist?

THREE SONGS THAT RESONATED WITH MY GRIEF
Here are three of my favourite songs to listen to when I feel overwhelmed by my grief and want to find some emotional release. They have helped me through some difficult times.

Goodnight, Travel Well- The Killers
From their 2008 album Day & Age

This song is an incredibly moving lament.
It encaptures all those initial feelings of pain, fear, and despair when we lose someone we love.
For me, the heartfelt cry of:"stay, don't leave me the stars can wait for your sign, don't signal now" is so poignant and captures that feeling of utter disbelief that the person is really gone, and the yearning for them to remain with us. It's a great track for when you want to really feel your grief.

Song to the Siren- Tim Buckley
An achingly beautiful song originally performed by Jeff Buckley's father.
Although it is arguably more of a love song, there is a deep melancholy and a sense of longing for someone who is beyond our reach. The music ebbs and flows like the tides, as does Buckley's voice.
The line"Oh my heart, oh my heart shies from the sorrow/ is waiting to hold you" is reminiscent of how when we learn to live without someone, it can feel as though we're simply waiting until we can see them, and hold them again.

Darling Arithmetic- Villagers (Conor O'Brien)
From their 2015 album Darling Arithmetic

This is a sorrowful melody, in which the singer addresses someone he has lost, or has left them, asking where they have gone, is it all just a trick?
This reminded me of the confusion and denial we can feel when we lose someone, simply trying to comprehend the fact that they are no longer there. It's definitely bittersweet, and there is a hint of fragility
in O'Brien's delicate vocals.

THREEÂ ARTISTS THAT HELPED WITH MY GRIEF
Here is a post little talking about three artists that have really helped me on those days when the grief is more consuming and the world feels like too much

Sufjan Stevens
Sufjan Stevens is without a doubt the first artist I turn to when I want to cope with my sadness through music. His soft, dreamy tones make me feel calm and safer to feel those scary feelings that I'd otherwise be avoiding. I would particularly recommend listening to the album Carrie & Lowell, on it Stevens sings about the death of his mother and his grief.
Agnes Obel
I discovered Agnes Obel at the very dawn of my grief, her music got me through a lot of difficult times. She puts a modern spin on classical music and it can be extremely calming and soothing for those overwhelming moments. I would recommend her album Aventine, which has my favourite track of hers, Tokka.
Lord Huron
Most well known for their song "The Night We Met", Lord Huron were a hidden gem for me. With two albums already released by the time I discovered them (and a third one released in 2018), I had plenty of content to keep me occupied. I would describe their music as a mix between indie and folk, if that sounds up your street then give their album Vide Noir a listen.
